Sand Creek Station
Plan your round at Sand Creek Station
Sand Creek Station is a public 18-hole course in Newton, Kansas, designed by Jeff Brauer, with back tees stretching beyond 7,200 yards and five sets of tees. Sand Creek runs beside holes 1, 2, 8 and 9, and several ponds come into play elsewhere. The course hosted the final U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, and several holes echo famous ones, including a green modeled on the Road Hole at St. Andrews. It bills itself as a public course with a private-club feel.

Sand Creek Station hole by hole
Par 3Par 4Par 5
Hole 1
"Sand Creek." A long, accurate tee shot is needed, favoring the right side of the fairway, with the creek meandering down the right. The approach is to an undulating green.
Hole 2
"Brauer's tree." Play the tee shot to the left side for the best angle in. A creek crosses the middle of the fairway, so a stray tee shot means laying up, and a tree guards the front of the green.
Hole 3
"Tabletop." A short par 3 with bunkers left of the green and water along the right. The green is described as playing like a tabletop.
Hole 4
"Forever." A par 5 where you aim at the bunkers on the left side of the fairway. Long hitters may be able to reach the green in two.
Hole 5
"Railroad." Railroad tracks run down the right side, a nod to Newton's history. It is demanding, especially into a south headwind.
Hole 6
"Elevation." Elevated tees give a clear view of a long par 4 with fairway bunkers on the right and water left of the green. The club calls it possibly the toughest par 4 on the course.
Hole 7
"Deception." Club selection is tricky on this par 3, and you must carry a large mound in front of the green.
Hole 8
"Serenity." A par 4 along Sand Creek that needs a long, accurate tee shot. The right side of the fairway gives the best approach, and the left side of the green has a run-off to avoid.
Hole 9
"Sand Grave." A tight par 4 to an elevated green guarded by two deep bunkers in front, so the approach must be accurate.
Hole 10
"The Beast." A very long par 5 with water to negotiate on all three shots: favor the right side off the tee to avoid water left, then the left to clear a lake on the right. The green has a large bunker left and water right.
Hole 11
"Opportunity." A short par 4 that offers a break after the tenth. Most players will have a short iron into a well-bunkered green.
Hole 12
"Uncertainty." A fairly forgiving fairway, but the green sits behind a large mound and can't be seen from the fairway. The club likens it to the 4th at National Golf Links of America.
Hole 13
"Hidden trouble." The longest par 3, usually a long iron or fairway wood. A long bunker runs along the left of the green and is only partly visible from the tee.
Hole 14
"Northward." The longest par 4, which tends to play downwind in summer. Fairway bunkers guard both sides and four bunkers sit behind the green, so a shorter approach is the safe play.
Hole 15
"Buried Elephants." A short par 4 with mammoth-shaped mounds on both sides of the fairway. Two big fairway bunkers are reachable from the tee, so laying up short of them leaves a short to mid iron in.
Hole 16
"Road Hole." The shortest par 5 and reachable in two, with the right side of the fairway giving the best angle. The green replicates the Road Hole green at St. Andrews.
Hole 17
"Horseshoe." A short par 3 whose green wraps around a deep bunker. It is better to be long than short.
Hole 18
"Stadium." A long, uphill par 4 with a narrow fairway between bunkers. Take an extra club into the green.
