Thunderhart is an 18-hole, par 72 public golf course in Freehold, in the northern Catskills about 35 minutes south of Albany. The front nine opened in 1969 to a design by Francis Duane, and William Gressick added the back nine in 2000. The championship tees play 6,482 yards over a layout with 11 ponds and 23 bunkers. The course is open to the public.

Know before you go

  • Bring a driver's license if you plan to rent a cart
  • Wear golf attire and soft spikes
  • Keep carts on paths on all par 3s
  • Order food to go at the turn to keep your tee position
  • Repair ball marks, replace divots and rake bunkers

Dress code

Appropriate golf attire is required. Baggy cargo shorts, cut-offs, sweats, tank tops, midriff tops, sports bras, bathing suits, flip flops, bare feet and metal spikes are not allowed.

Carts & walking

Carts require a valid driver's license, hold two golfers and must follow cart paths and posted directions. Stay at least 30 feet from greens, keep carts off tee boxes, and note that all par 3s are cart-path only.

Practice facilities

There is a putting green outside the pro shop and a driving range of more than 250 yards. Instruction is available through the pro shop, and an indoor golf simulator operates in the winter season.

Food & drink

The Clubhouse Grill is next to the pro shop. No outside alcohol or coolers are allowed. Golfers who stop to dine at the turn may lose their tee position, so ordering food to go is an option.

Pace of play

Groups are limited to four players and singles may be asked to join another group. Faster groups may be allowed to play through.

Policies

The course is open to the public. The USGA Rules of Golf apply, and white stakes mark out-of-bounds. Parents are responsible for their children on the course and in the practice areas.
