Spyglass Hill Golf Course

Plan your round at Spyglass Hill Golf Course

Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed Spyglass Hill, and it opened on March 11, 1966. It's a public course in the Del Monte Forest on the Monterey Peninsula, owned and operated by Pebble Beach Company, and it has been part of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am rotation since 1967. The opening five holes play through sandy dunes with Pacific Ocean views. The other thirteen wind through Monterey pines and are known for demanding tee shots and heavily contoured greens. Every hole is named for a character or place in Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, and the 595-yard 1st, "Treasure Island," ends at a green surrounded by sand. The course record is 62, shot by Phil Mickelson and Luke Donald during the Pro-Am.

Before you go

Everything to know on arrival

Know before you go

  • Non-resort guests: book up to 3 months out by phone
  • Cart path only, always — or walk with a pull cart
  • Tell the gate attendant you have a tee time
  • No denim, cargo shorts, or sweats
  • 14-day cancellation policy, rain or shine
  • Bring extra balls: the first five holes play through dunes and sand
  • Plan on 4½–5 hours

Arrival & check-in

Spyglass Hill is inside the gated Pebble Beach community, off Stevenson Drive in the Del Monte Forest. Tell the gate attendant you have a tee time when you enter. Depending on your business at the resort, you may not have to pay the 17-Mile Drive fee. The clubhouse, pro shop, and Spyglass Hill Grill are next to the 9th green.

Dress code

Golf attire is required. Pebble Beach Resorts asks golfers to wear a golf shirt and golf-appropriate outerwear. Shorts and pants are both fine, but not denim, cargo, or sweats.

Carts & walking

Walking is allowed. Pull carts, caddies (single or double bag) and forecaddies (3-player minimum) are available, as are riding carts, and the course is ALWAYS cart path only, so expect to walk from the path to your ball.

Practice facilities

There's a driving range with grass and mats, practice chipping and sand areas, and a practice putting green. The full Pebble Beach Golf Academy & Practice Facility is also on Stevenson Drive.

Rentals & pro shop

Rental clubs are available.

Food & drink

Spyglass Hill Grill is next to the 9th green and serves informal, traditional American food from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. It's a good place for breakfast before your round, a stop at the turn, or a meal afterward. Golf attire is fine.

Pace of play

Plan on about 4½ to 5 hours. Spyglass is one of the toughest courses in the country, and the cart-path-only rule means riders walk to their balls, which adds time.

Policies

Resort guests at Pebble Beach Resorts can book up to 18 months ahead. Non-resort guests can book up to 3 months ahead by calling (800) 877-0597, and April through November is the busiest season. Non-resort guests also pay the cart fee. Tee times have a 14-day cancellation policy, rain or shine. If the course is open, you're expected to play as scheduled, and no exceptions are made before the day of play.
